I bought Minecraft back in October. I messed around in single player for a few minutes, then immediately went online looking for a server. Poking around on the forum for Alpha SMP servers, I saw a title for some kind of Multiverse thing. 'Hey, cool'. I thought. A bunch of maps to play on at once. (This wouldn't be the case for a while, haha, but it was still very eye-catching). I throw up an application, get an e-mail from Kainzo, and log on.

I spawn in front of a giant gate. A few "Hello"s and "welcome"s pop up on my screen.

Shit, how do I talk?

After a quick moment in the settings menu, I'm happily chatting to the 10 or so people on the server. I then get a personal introduction by Kainzo of DH City (I wish so much he actually had time to do stuff like that again) and am told that if I click on this little block on the ground it will send me out by some water. Okay? Click. (Runecraft was available even that early.)

Oh balls, where am I? Now that I am thoroughly lost, I stat to follow a small path leading to the water's edge and stumble on a massive glass castle. 'Whos is this?' I ask in /g (global chat, elite chat at the time was /*). Someone named Apherdite or something said it was theirs. Cool, but I want my own spot. I wander off a bit, find a good spot, and start hollowing out a "mountain". It was only a spire with a few stacks of dirt and cobble inside, but after a couple hours I was so proud of it. I exclaim so in chat, and Kainzo teleports to me to check it out. We talk for a bit, and then he heads off and we both continue our various projects.

Guys, I'll say it here, and you all know it is true.

Minecraft is boring as fuck.

Pick up a block, move it somewhere else. Hey look! I made a stature that kinda looks like a stick-figure. Hahaha haha ha ha... okay crap, what do I do now? Herocraft and then what was the "multi"verse is the only reason I, like Amgroma, play this game. The people, the mods, and most importantly, the amazing staff that keeps this ever-growing pile of code from self destructing. People are constantly whining about "Heroes made me lose this" and "I can't do yada yada anymore!" Well, calm yo tits for a moment and think about it. You can't use diamond picks? So? Other than the first map with the drop-repair bug, I never use diamond tools. Stone to mine and iron for ores is all you'll ever need. You're losing perks as a donator? Why don't you play single-player for a week and see what it's like to have nothing at all. You know what I could do as a T3 donator back in the day? I got a vault. And it was the coolest thing ever. Now, T3s get a vault and locked chests and access to skills from this kickass plugin the staff is making FROM SCRATCH. Maybe I have a different perspective on the changes that have been happening because I've been around so long, but just compare what you get compared to single-player or any other serve you could attempt to play. I do research at my school with experiments that constantly fail and need modification; I understand how Kanzno and the coding staff feels, especially with dozens of "When is X going to work?" flooding their screen every time they log on. The other day I saw Kaizno building DHX and I thought I was going to faint. I hadn't seen Kaizno building in god knows how long.

Anyway, with that off my chest, I was to say I love this community and it's staff. I could be more vocal in chats, sure, but all the whining I see just turns me off from talking. Please, please have more understanding for where this server came from and the work that has been put into it, and just enjoy it as it is: a communal game.

Totally agree with you Alator. You've been here since Map 1 right?

Most members on Herocraft dont realize how much they have, because they haven't been around long enough to know what it really means to have nothing. The coding team works way too hard and doesn't get enough appreciation.

After playing SSP for about a month, I thought I'd give this game a try online back in October. I wasn't one to typically play online (if September me knew June me was posting on a forum for an online multiplayer game, he'd think that was ridiculous), but I had a feeling that Minecraft was a cultural experience that I didn't want to miss out on. I signed up for the Minecraft forums, flipped through the servers on the first page of the SMP subforum, and posted on the Herocraft thread[/url] because I looked at Kainzo's post on the first page and thought "hmm, this is written well enough, these guys must care about their server".

After getting a "you've been whitelisted" PM from Ashmaker (who I met once, and never saw again), I logged in, and for the rest of the day was totally blown away by all the structures on the server. I had seen pictures of people building great things, but this was my first time seeing something up close that was more grand than my cobblestone castle on top of a mountain. After a warm welcome in public chat, and some fumbling around with chat controls, I was asking noob questions in no time! Lord_Commisar was down by the DH City teleporter to the nexus, and he showed me a bit of what there was around there and how to get about with the teleporters, and by the end of the day I was paying Skaduush 10 iron ingots to build a house in Duushdale Hollow.

I remember hearing about the Halloween Update map wipe coming very soon, so I would just spend hours on those first few days simply exploring the server, a habit which I still have to this day. I remember buying a headset so that I could join TS3 and help build Sovereign Barrows on the last alpha map. I remember getting promoted to Mod in mid-November, and how the game changed from moving blocks from in the ground to in a house to helping others enjoy playing Herocraft as much as I do. I thought I'd played ever kind of game there ever was, but I'd never played a game where the objective is "help others have fun", and the only skills available are leadership and diplomacy. I joined the first server I applied to, and I've never looked back, because I was looking for a new and exciting cultural experience to share with others, and I found it right here.

I know I'm not going to play here forever. Maybe someday I'll just stop coming because I finally get bored of it, or get too busy, or Herocraft will burn to the ground, or the Hrungnir Empire will invade the Earth and abolish all forms of recreation in their iron rule. Something special happened here over the past several months, and that will never be taken from me, whatever may come. Are the people I've met here my friends? I've never given it much though, because with little exception I've never made friends with someone I hadn't met in real life. I was willing to be a friend when I signed up for this, though, and I think I've succeeded in sharing enough fond times with the people of this server that I can call you my friends. Thanks to all of you, new friends and old, for being a part of the experiences over the past 8 months, and I hope to join you for 8 more!

P.S. A TS3 channel for HC veterans? We should call it the "Old Guard".

One who dwells on the past will never greet the future kindly

That's not to say that we shouldnt embrace the good times and rejoice them. I miss the old DH days, but every day is a new day, with new memories and new associations.

Lol those are some great videos. I forgot about karaoke night.

Was a good read by the way, especially with that music you linked playing in the background.

While I rarely find the time to actually log onto the server, this server has surpassed many times over what I expected to get out of this game. Huge thanks go to Kainzo and the other staff members for handling the monstrous amount of issues the server presents each day which most of us only see a sliver of. An even bigger personal thanks, however, goes to the rest of you Herocrafters for tolerating the rough patches of plugin maintenance and the (hopefully lessening) issues of live plugin development. This community provides me (and I'm sure much of the coding team) the motivation to keep producing and maintaining the plugins our server uses.

Oh and I'd appreciate you all taking a minute to check out http://www.dthielke.com/test.

Haha, Amgroma and Brutal, you are such Herocraft n00bs. I joined about 3 weeks before you ;) Jokes aside, just like you are saying Amgroma, the community is what makes me log in to Herocraft or even play minecraft at all. If it wasnt for the awesome community on Herocraft I would most likely have been playing something completely else or just watch anime on the computer or something :p

Am, you told us to share memories? Ok:
  • I remember from first map I was on (not preivous, but the one before that one) me, OrangeAngel and Capn_Danger building in DarkForge together. An underground city in a giant mountain hall. I remember making a giant glass pathway right under the ceiling connecting all the houses in town.
  • I remember blocking Madlum and basically mutilating everyone who tried to pass. (they deserved it though, they were EVIL)
  • I remember me building some giant monuments outside SkyForge and terraforming a lake around them, and AfroDave coming to help out as it was his first day as a citizen of SkyForge. Me being sceptical due to him not being so old, was afraid he'd mess something up. Luckily we were just digging away as much terrain as possible, which basically is impossible to do wrong, so it all went well. ;) (hehe, just joking Afro.) From that day on, he was one of my best companions in Herocraft.
  • I also remember Blasphemy (which I always managed to call Blasmephy :p) who was located pretty close to SkyForge. So BarGraphics (Im amazed noone has mentioned him yet) constanly were camping right outside our rings with a diamond sword and suit. (that was at the time when pvp was on in towns, but was illegal to do inside the rings. that ofcourse lead to massive amounts of complaints and quarrels brought to mods always being about wether or not the guy being killed was right inside or right outside the rings)
  • I remember the fall of Blasphemy, with some ex-blasphemians trying to say they had reformed (Nuremberg Trials style) And the following raiding some time later.
  • I remember the start of the Nether. Everyone wanted to get in. The chat was spammed with a combination of swearing and death messages of people falling in lava. :D twas fun. When I finally got in, the entrance in hell was filled with ghasts. Well, it was worth it. We got lightstone and netherrack.
  • I remember the EPIC KoE railways.
  • I remember Hogwarts. Domitius, you're amazing!
  • I also remember the "sex tape" with Xanipher. Hawt shit.

And that was the past. Now its time to make the future even more amazing. To everyone who likes the sexy time, Im currently building a casino/strip club/brothel in Newerth. So if you can persuade a boy or girl to go with you (either with coins or other promises) heart beds can be rented for a cheap buck, or free if Im allowed to make a film of it ;)

Anyway, Im looking forward to more fun. And sure Amgroma, I'll be more on teamspeak :)

Okay, I'm sure I'm not the only one who misses Elroy. He was the only reason I was in Neverast for more than a week. I don't know what else to say other than he was a good person and I hope he comes back to HC.

Now, when I first applied to HC, January 12(or 13), 2011, no one even seemed to look at my app on the old HC forums. I think that was a major contributing factor. On the new forums, I reposted, and asked Brutal to check it. He said he would and get back to me, and tell me to fix it or I was accepted. Well being Brutal, he didn't reply at all, even after 2-3 days. (he never replied still to this day :p) So I went ahead and applied on the MC forums. I was accepted by someone within 2 hours.

While waiting to be accepted, I looked through all the townships, and decided I would join Artemis, or Neverast. No one from Artemis was on when I got on, so I decided to join Neverast. I remember when I got on the next day, Applelove showed me around and set up a region for my plot. I went ahead and got some materials and went building away. After completing it, I asked if there was a mine I could use. There was, so I went mining for a little while and got some iron and coal and went back to my house. I chatted with the locals for some time, and made friends with Caliginous.

A few days later, they made noble plots, which Cal bought 2. I was going to save up and get one, and he knew, so he went ahead and gave me his extra plot. I was excited, and began terraforming the mountain side plot. I made a cave like house out of smooth stone, and was proud of my little smooth stone house. I went on the make a bedroom, the nicest and most decorated room of the house. After making windows for my bedroom, I logged for the night.

Later on, Blasphemy came. Those were fun times for me. I remember holing up in greyp's house outside of Nova with Suungkim(sorry if I spelled wrong) Applelove, maybe brutal, and quite a few others. Bargraphics kept digging in and would run in, and we would all hit eachother trying to kill him lol. I also remember going to Chronus to help find and kill spongiform. When I got there I was attacked by Chronus members who weren't in TS, thinking I was with MOB.

Bloodline. That was a mistake. I honestly apologize for all that I did, and it was a bad idea to join Rane. We were assholes, especially me and rane. My biggest apologies go to IKaosI and the rest of old Newerth, and Strongholdx. We did some stupid stuff and we really pissed people off, and I'm sorry.

I really want to thank all of the Staff of Herocraft for maintaining the server like they do. Thank you all for not going ballistic at all of us for being idiots or trolls. I also want to thank the coders especially, seeing that too many people complain about them than appreciate all their hard work and dedication to making the server fun for us. Thank you all, I love herocraft, and the community.
