Suggestion [PvP Flagging] How do you know people's flags?

It seemed like the most popular suggestion for merging the PvP and PvE server together was to use PvP flagging. This is where a player can turn on or off pvp at spawn (or something).

I used this option for a while on my server and I ran into a common problem:
How do you know if someone is pvp or pve?

Well, you could hit them and find out, but by then you've already put yourself at risk to counterattack. For example, if your raiding group sees a group of 5 people. One of them is a PvE player. If you guess wrong, then you could be at a disadvantage in that fight.

You could use a command to check if a player has pve or pvp enabled, but that also takes time (maybe a macro would work?)

What do you think is the best solution?

So many problems with this.

What if a non flagged person stands in front of arrows/fireballs/other projectiles soaking up spells. Picks up loot safely. So many problems to solve.

As far as flagging it would either need to be name color RED(Flagged)/GREY(PVE)/GREEN(Allied) or some other floating visual marker.

EDIT: I don't personally believe this is a good idea, or the right direction. :(

If the worlds are to be combined it would really need to be zoned imo.

So many problems with this.

What if a non flagged person stands in front of arrows/fireballs/other projectiles soaking up spells. Picks up loot safely. So many problems to solve.

As far as flagging it would either need to be name color RED(Flagged)/GREY(PVE)/GREEN(Allied) or some other floating visual marker.

EDIT: I don't personally believe this is a good idea, or the right direction. :(

Like I mentioned in the other thread, the only way I can see combining the servers working would be a setup like this:

  • Zolaria map, where PVE and PvP is king. PvP would be disabled in many small to medium group MOB spawns, allowing casual group based PVE content. The casuals would also have a massive city in which they could purchase plots for personal, guild or township use in the weakest area of the map. Dungeons or other high level zones with increased reward designed for groups of 5-10 that are PvP enabled could function as guild/township hot spots, with nearby capture points or other similar PvP goals giving more meaningful PvP goals and encounters while the rest of the world would serve as an RPG experience of group oriented combat - no build except for personal/guild/township plots inside several main cities. There would be 15-20 "Township Plots" where the PvP oriented townships could claim and build their towns, all PvP enabled and siege-able. These township plots would be strategically located near dungeons and other hotspots giving a greater purpose to taking them over and controlling them or even sieging them down to get a better location for your township.
  • Ruins Map, where griefing is allowed and all non casual mining would happen. PVP on.
  • Green Acres, where community is boss. Items would not transfer out of green acres, and although you level in green acres at the same pace as other maps, the amount of experience to level and the amount of experience gained is half that of the other maps, meaning once you max at level 65 in green acres, you are still only approx level 45 in the other maps.

This would still allow for pure heroes no PVP play for the ultra casual, but would stop the PVPers and main server players from leveling and mining on the PVE server.

What if pvp is based on townships warring each other? The map itself would be pve, while letting the pvp players duke it out between themselves. This would do a few things, it would make townships serve a higher purpose (you cant pvp without having at least 2 townships warring each other) It would also expose pvers to the more entertaining side of pvp, (not the being ganked part) perhaps changing their mind and encouraging the move into a pvp oriented town. It would also create a cool economy as the pve towns would profit off of funding the warring ones.

Edit: Tnt would be limited to destroying townships that are at war.

It's just to easy for non flagged people to grief. Have a member of your township leave the town to make them PVE and then have them effect combat, pick up loot and cause problems all while being "safe" from PvP. Remember the staff want systems that are automated. They don't want to have to police people griefing the system.

Flag effects? could do a particle or potion effect -- we could mess with name tags - but as of 1.8 thats been causing a lot of issues.

The system will work for flagging and zones as well as auto flagging if you go into a township that is not your own.

What about /hats for flags, i know that bastion had those battlegrounds that used blocks to show teams, could that be used to show pvp flagged players? Forgive my ignorance if that is impossible to do.

As for pvers interfering with pvpers intentionally, strict rules resulting in bans would definately deter this.

So you know how when you attack players on PVE server you get a message, what about the same system for unflagged individuals, on top of the visual effects carbash and kainzo were suggesting. a second option would be if we could add in something akin to damage indicators mod. throw up a buff on the bar and if you see the buff (or dont see the buff) you know you're safe to attack them. On a side note something similar to damage indicators would be useful for keeping track of buffs and debuffs on a target while in combat. It's useful for PVP and PVE. The only down side to it would be the actual trying to code it in. And the fact that it might be resource intensive (no proof).

There could be 3 zones.
1- Anyone can attack anyone and gets flagged if they do.
2- Anyone can attack flagged people, and can be attacked only be who they attacked or if they are flagged.
3- No PvP. Flagged players can't enter.
