We had the same thing for MLK Day... fried chicken, fried catfish, macaroni, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie...

Although they ARE traditional southern foods, my school seems to ignore the idea that they're black stereotypes.

Actually they left off two important things if they wanted to make it a real stereotype.

My office is near a crappier part of Memphis (herein referred to as Raleigh). Raleigh is an utter shithole. The police don't go there unless they are in groups of 2 or 3 with separate cars in case one is disabled. The ambulance services DO NOT go there at all. The fire dept will wait on Austin Peay Freeway until officers arrive. It was also listed as 98% african american (none of them have been to africa in generations, BTW) in the last census.

That said; the food places are total stereotypes. Your choice include KFC, Jack Pirytles Chicken (local), Popeye's Chicken, and a few local ma and pa shops for chicken and fried catfish. There is also a shitty BBQ chain called Topp's. Once you get out of Raleigh and get into the 'better' parts of Memphis, heading out to West Memphis in Arkansas, you get places like Zaxby's (Fried Chicken Chain) and a few Mexican places that serve... well, Mexican, catfish and chicken.

Also, I totally SHIT YOU NOT, right down the road from my office is a hair salon called 'Nappy hair is Happy hair."

If you dont like chicken, or catfish, there are a few decent BBQ places. I am on a competition BBQ team (that has won grand champion, competes well at the world bbq championship, and we win a LOT) so my standards are awfully high. Central BBQ on Summer isnt too bad. Love'n Fresh Bakery in Oakland (outside of Memphis) is pretty much the best shit around. The rest are idiots with cookers.

I'm from Calgary, Canada, and I see maybe 1 black person in the course of my day, yet we still have all those stereotypes.
