When you upgraded to 1.8.1 minecraft saves a "version" file in the bin folder, this tells the launcher when to update or not. So whether you use an alpha jar or whatever, it doesn't matter. When we get to 1.9, you could still play with 1.7.3 etc. Until notch changes the system this is how it's been since the old launcherOk I switched from a 1.8.1 Jar back to a 1.7.3 Jar, but when I log in it does not ask me to update or not (this is a feature on one of the launchers).
It just takes me to the 1.7.3 title page. Is this supposed to happen? Will the same happen when I go back to 1.8.1? Will it ask me to upgrade to 1.9 when it comes out? Or not? :S
Im new to this, can someone explain?
I don't even know what your problem is anymore XD \The restore didn't work.. :/ Oh well i'm still having loads of trouble, if you wouldn't mind can you post a guide on this kind of thing??

You say you can only get to the Loading screen. You cant get to the main menu?
Ok, so you renamed the jar file as minecraft? or minecraft.jar?Nah, I can't get to the main menu.. :/
Err.. Been trying ALOT of things.. Point is, I uninstalled MC, redownloaded it, deleted everything in the "Bin" folder, and replaced it with 1.7.3(clean). It didn't work, but I'm pretty sure i'm doing something wrong. When I start Minecraft, I am able to log in, but when it asks if I want to update and I click "Not now" then it loads up to like 95%ish, then it just stops there. I left my cpu for 20 mins and it was the same. Any help? :S
Edit: Tried it again, I clicked Not now for the update, then it brings me to the screen "Updating Minecraft - Done Loading" Still a bit lost here.. :/

Which OS do you use?

Yes.Well I plan to switch back to 1.8.1 (I have made a copy of that .jar) when the server gets to 1.8.1. When I am back in 1.8.1, will it offer me to upgrade to 1.9 when Notch releases that patch? Like when 1.7.3 offered to upgrade to 1.8? Yes or no?
Sorry, I am just getting a bit confused about all of this. Like I said I am new to this.
Rename it minecraft not minecraft.jar that should be the issue.I renamed it as minecraft.jar
And my OS is windows 7
