Whenever you play an open world multiplayer game, these is almost always world events and almost none of them actually matter. What if we had events of some sort that threaten the existence of the heroes. For example a wither skeleton that slowly flies to spawn and starts causing chaos. The monster should be easily fled from, however, by jumping into a herogate or running away from spawn. If defeated all participating heroes would get a large sum of exp and the hero who gets the final blow gets a unique item. Another event idea would be a random point popping up on the map for people to fight over to get a large sum of loot similar to that of a treasure chest (when we had those). The point would take around the same time to capture as an outpost although they do not need to be set in predetermined structures. Another idea would be randomly generated defended points that once a player had entered the area, they must fend off monsters for a time to get loot. Just thinking of events that will bring players together to do battle, be reminded that monsters are a threat, and reward people who want to fight by giving them a fight rather than hunting down new players.
