I've found Zan's Minimap to be a very very useful mod. I highly recommend it. Just google Zan's minimap to find it.

Heads up zans minimap isnt allowed in HC, Rei's minimap is allowed though

Yes, Kainzo has announced it a bunch of times in game, but hasn't made a thread or anything.
Use Rei's Minimap
It looks better, runs faster, has the cavemapping disabled for SMP and has way more options.
