I'm not sure if any one used to play a MMORPG called Ragnarok Online (RO). On all the servers they would host an event called War Of Emperium (WoE) where guilds fight each other to break the emperium (a golden diamond crystal) and take over the castle.
The event is usually two hours long on Saturday & Sunday and it is non-stop Guild vs Guild during that period. The objective is to be the last guild to be in control of the castle by the end of the war on Sunday. After that the castle will give out daily chests of goodies to the victors of the guild until it all starts again the following week.
Here are some ideas:
- A giant castle of some sort filled with lava pits, piston traps, unbreakable spider webs, guard towers, etc
- Multiple levels (objective is to reach a room in the top floor)
- The top floor with an obsidian block that needs to be broken in order to take control of the castle (this gives it a challenge, so a player can't just kite to the top and break a block instantly)
- Every time a new town takes control of the castle, everyone is ported out except for the defending town to give them a chance to get into position
- Enable miner TNT at the castle
- /skill mark disabled within the region
- The defending town has a direct portal back into the castle
- An entrance fee per town? Money is pooled and maybe doubled and given out as the victory prize after the event is over on Sunday.
