Using the map

I LOVE that the server has a map. It it truly beautiful. I would like to use it to find a lake both large enough for a big underwater dome and close enough for convenience. The trouble is... I don't really know where I am on the map. I know that I am Northwest of Zeal, so I know the general location. I also know that it shouldn't be too hard to crawl out of the cave I'm hiding in and find a landmark and know where I am. I'm looking for something I can 1) use in the future and 2) use when the server is full. I have my coordinates written down; is there a version with a grid I could use? Or... I suppose if someone could perhaps give the coordinates for some other landmarks, I could find it out...

Hmm... And I suppose if that doesn't work, I could measure it out if someone gave me the diameter of the floating island, the hole it is in, or the glowstone ring around it.

To get the diameter of the glowstone ring, type /getpos and walk to the other side and type /getpos. It is a circle so it doesn't matter about North to South or East to West. The difference between those 2 numbers = diameter. At this point you can easily see that you can do one of two things, scale a grid to the entire map based on that or simply scale that diameter measurement and use that as a ruler for finding the distance of the rest of the map. Pythagorean theorem can find any hypotenuse distances if you want the true distance to a place and not just the cords.

I know how to calculate a distance, but the point of my asking was that I didn't want to have to venture into the unknown wilderness (PVPphobia). I was hoping that someone already knew a distance that others could use as a scale when viewing the map. I'm not going to go all the way back to the spawn point; if that were my only choice, I'd just find a landmark and position myself accordingly, as I stated in my post.

Does anyone know a distance that others (not only me) can use as a measuring device to find their approximate coordinates on the map?

Or if anyone knows how often the map is updated, I could just go outside my cave and plant a circle of roses or something to find myself...

The map is updated whenever Kainzo uploads a new one. That last one was from June 6th. You will see new ones in the announcement section in the same place the first one was.
