Is there a specific reason why town are polygons? Imo it makes building especially walls just quite a bit harder and less efficient for towns then a square would. Yes a square 150x150 block area would be bigger then the current area but not by that much.

You can still make a square within the polygon.

You know that a square IS a polygon? I like the regions because it incentives making non-boxy towns.

Ignore the boundaries of your region, build something beautiful that expands way outside your region. It can be pretty and bigger than your region and still keep raiders out. It all works as long as there are no players living or no entrances to the underground in the areas outside the region. I am assuming all towns have an undercity these days.
