If you're lucky, you can buy the game during the holidays/special events. The expansions normally go down by a crap load. For Black Friday, Vanilla - WotLK went down to $5 and Cata to $20.

Yea I leveled a few chars to 70 and 80 as well back in the day... not worth it so far.

WoW has not helped my RL at all... At least I've managed to loose all the weight that I put on while playing it.. but that time I will never get back^^
