The map

So I was exploring for a place to set up shop, however I couldn't find one. I then google'd the map and I saw the size of the map.

Still new to minecraft, I was told that the normal maps were about 1/3 the size of the earth and take days to traverse, I made it from spawn to the edge in less than an hour.

I also didn't see "the farlands" and I kept being moved back every time I got to 2500.

Why is this?

Also, is it just me or on this server days and nights last twice as long?

Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, still new.

Map is limited to reduce lag.
Lag causes days and nights to be longer

2500 is the block radius of the map. And the lasting of day and night is determined by lag.

It would take you over 34 days of non-stop walking to make it to the Far Lands.
As for the size of a "normal" map, Minecraft will expand as far as you want to go. In my single player game, I can walk from one edge of my "map" to the other in under an hour, because I just haven't chosen to explore further than that. But if I wanted to, I could continue walking for days and days beyond my "normal" map, and Minecraft would continue to generate new terrain. With several hundred players, however, Herocraft couldn't handle so much memory required for a limitless map. Hence the cap. Over the next few months, Kain plans to expand the map considerably, from a 2500 block radius to a 5000 block radius. So... four times bigger than it currently is. :)

Actually - 2500R is about normal for map size. Most other servers don't run much larger. 2500R is 500MB on the drive. With each increase of 100R - you're looking at exponential size increases.

"Most MC maps are 1/3rd the size of the earth" <--- completely wrong. The map size needed to acquire this would be 30-40GB of info on one map. Someone done lied to you!

I believe he is referring to how big MC can go.

Well, in the days of Infdev MC could continue to generate terrain until the map was about 8 times the Earth's surface area before it started running into problems with the code. You're welcome to test Beta's limit in SSP, but an SMP map that size could never, ever run on the MC code.

Either case, we're planning on doubling the maps size at some point in the future ;)

I want it to be, at some point, where roads are not going to be enough for easy travel. We actually might have to implement a rail way system for faster transportation. That would be really cool.

A world twice as big as ours would have R≈3500, so walking from one corner of the world to the other would cover about 9.9 kilometers, a bit over a half-hour at the walking rate of the MC avatar (about 15 kph). A rail system would be the wisest way to travel in such a world.

yay, darktide has a rail system, but it also sucks because people just wait on the rails for some unlucky traveler to cross their path. and lava traps are also a problem.

There could be Major railway systems protected by admin and smaller one branching out for the towns. We could have multiple stops and different stations and those could be a hub for different smaller railway leading to the different towns.

I've also talked to some of my town members about making a waterway system so you can travel with boat, it's a better alternative than railway system right now due to the fact that railway require a massive amount of iron.
