Suggestion Requirement for City

As a requirement for City, you should be required to have an accessible entrance into a small public part of your city:

1. Not a dirt entrance, but a vanilla/profession mechanic entrance (Mason Gate, Wooden Door, etc.)

2. It does not have to be open or unlocked, but Telekinesis must be able to open it.

3. This would not open the entire city, just a central square area where players can interact. Most cities would keep it open, and show off their towns theme/build in the small public area (think: slighty more intricate than the public area of Ironpass, Zeal).


Would allow for interactions between cities to feel real. Not just raids but all sorts of non-violent interactions as well.

Would introduce a competitive element to town builds, beyond screenshots and escorted visits.

Entrances from the public area to your town (not the public area itself) can be Traps. Ooh Traps!

It's a nice concept but with the nature of PVP and the limits of plot space, it doesn't really serve a city to have this. By having this requirement, you're allowing a region of your city immediately accessible to not just guests, but to raiders, murders, etc. Think of the design culture this would promote. You'd effectively have two kinds of centers develop: tunnels, perfectly sealed where no one could use this path to cut into the city proper, and killing zones, setup for residents to launch attacks down at visitors/raiders while they are in this limits space. Even having rules against traps in this area wouldn't limit cities from setting up such killing zones.

The culture we have now of dirt, wool, or other material tiny doors come from the culture of the environment the game presents. We have no need for large entrances to support a trade caravan or other large group of city immigrants. Instead the culture of the game demands only a slim entrance ideal for a small group of players to quickly enter and exit without pause or alarm. In order to have a similar real world requirement for a vast city entrance the player base culture would need to have a reason to be prompted for this change, other than enforcing a rule that makes little sense in the environment we currently reside within.

If you want city designers to do this provide an incentive for it otherwise adding this rule would force all towns to create an area of their cities they just simply wouldn't go because it wouldn't be safe. There are possibilities to consider: If an area could be deemed safe during certain times (such as Minecraft day), but turned hostile/pvp enabled at night, this space would have potential. In that mindset, you could enable a public space for shops, taverns, and other public works, while still not giving towns a perfect "Safe zone" all the time. Such a carrot may be appealing to users interested in sharing their building talents while not wanting to expose themselves to hostilities with ease. An alternative would be some sort of NPC economy plug-in, that could enable "open cities" to have trade caravans between other "open cities," earning them free money/goods for their town bank, easing the burden of upgrading or providing maintenance costs.

If you want to instill these types of changes you need a reason to change the culture, not just because it doesn't reflect the real world.

Telekinesis and the required mason entrance will just create a bigger pain in the ass to get a legal town and force people to level up a profession/class they don't want to just for that reason.

Did this last map with Alicubi. It was difficult at first but then people began to interact in a friendly manner.
