The best system is to ditch the diminshing returns on the player end and put it on the back end, so 1:1 ratio is kept.
However, this takes a lot of time and custom code that we may never have the time to do, hence this system was brought in.
I think its a good idea to increase the amount of attributes allowed and scale down the actual effects. We will need to completely rebalance the entire system when custom-items WITH attributes come out.
