Keep our Main Roads Clean and useful

Certain towns, like Apherdite and Ironpass and Olympus, to name three, are built along the main roads.

They block the main roads, but each deals with it in a different way.

Ironpass has a blockade, that you can ask to be let through heading out (from Zeal), and is usually open heading in (to Zeal).

Olympus has a curvy road that reaches it and goes around it, making the average traveler take 50 blocks out of their way, but maintaining traveler safety and server beauty.

Apherdite has a dirt 1x1 walkway that goes around their town, in direct contrast to the beautiful stretch of road in between it and Ares.

These three methods have varying succcess.

I suggest that Towns be required to either make main road access open to travelers, or at least to create a simple, 2x1 path that goes around their town that is NOT made of dirt, so that travelers on the main roads can use the main roads.

This would not be a serious rule, more one of courtesy. In addition, your town looks worse when new players walk by and have to make their way through the wilderness. Not everyone can be asked to make the road through their town like Ironpass, but a simple path around would be a gesture I think we can all appreciate.

Too long to read version: Simple, Required, 2x1 Paths circumnavigating towns that are on the Main Roads, to keep the server clean and pretty.

Thoughts?

I think there should be some sort of eminent domain regarding paths from Zeal, and a rule saying that you have to at least provide some kind of clear, easily identifiable path would be a good one.

Er.. I cant understand what yuo are saying can you fix your grammar please

Perhaps a from -2 to +2 on all axis should be considered Road blocks, and if a town exists on that road, they should be required to make a flat, 2x2 simple path at the least (although the more illustrious towns will want to make more complex paths I am sure.

No one outside of the town can change this, because no one is allowed to build within 100 blocks of a town. Towns should take it upon themselves to present a clean and orderly picture to the traveling wayfarer, whether you be from close towns like Typhon (R.I.P.) or from distant ones, like The Wilderness.

Robacollver - I believe you are addressing my remarks towards IP. Earlier today, I went west and when I reached Ironpass, was told by a member that there was a blockade on the main road. After a few more pleasantries, he opened the gate and I was on my way. I dont know if a non-ally would have been treated as such, but regardless, it would be nice to have an alternate path around the city going west. I would be interested to hear what Spire does, do they just walk around if the way is blocked?

This isn't a large change. Have some town pride, and help out the traveler. Tomorrow its going to be you that runs into that creeper that blasts you off a cliff because there was no path.

I remember when I was starting out on the server, I would always walk around IP. There is no signage informing people that the road is open / will be opened for travelers. In fact, I thought that IP just built over the road and possessed it.

I still walk around IP simply because I have been killed on approach a few times before and our relations with IP have previously been one of Kill on Sight. :p

As IP have built around the road, there is no easy way to escape if you were to be attacked by a member of IP. Anyone who walks through doesn't have regions, and citizens of IP can use this to their advantage to corner travelers through the town. If you are walking along a road you can easily bypass / run away from people who are trying to kill you whilst you can't really do that when walking through IP.

I'm not saying this happens / that IP would do this, I'm just saying the perception of this occurring is there, especially with new players. Signage may help, but there will always be the thought in the back of a players mind "Am I going to be ambushed whilst walking through IP?"

Personally, as a Planner, I would have liked to see major arterial roads (N/S/E/W Links) marked as public assets that no one can build around / over / claim ownership of, but it is too late to change that now.

i appreciate the major roads, but i would like to see what happens if the roads were not constructed, I'm sure someone would have just built roads anyways, but may only out to where we needed them. I really like how the East is still pretty much our last frontier as midguard, i thnk, is the only town out there.

I know this is a medieval themed server but I liked the medieval road building practices where the roads were curvy and what not to fit the contours of the land, mega highways just seem out of place to me.

I don't think this is the problem about roads, if I might say.

The real problem is the look of them! Seriously, go onto the World Map and you look directly at the four roads out of Zeal. They are a mess. A total mess. They have building constructions and pillars left all over the place, barren deserted (once forests) plains all around them, ugly run down shops on them, and not to mention the area around them ALSO has:

- Untidy houses and projects.
- Left half finished buildings, ABANDONED!
- Beaches stripped and left bumpy.
- Long ugly 1 block bridges that go right across the oceans!

Oh lord I could go on and on..

You see, I suggest we have a clean up act! A clean up act that goes around removing these horrible unsightly pieces of work off the map to make the actual land outside of Zeal Cleaner. To be perfectly honest, the best looking road I can see is the West Road. All the others either and unfinished or have too much going on around them (Building work ect).

EDIT:

Why would we do this though? To make the server a nicer place. I am sure when players want to join this server, they will propably go on the map and look at what we have. What happens if they see a wasteland right outside the central spawn? They are not going to think of it nicely are they now? It would also give them a bad first impression when they got onto the server.

I'm a Spire member, and i have only ever been killed once near IP, and that was because I was snooping around a castle near the town. Personally I enjoy travelling through IP, because it is a beautiful town, and I generally feel safe travelling through, with regards to their 'good' status. I think that most of the IP members stick to the No-PVP in IP rule, so to conclude, I don't worry about travelling through IP, and I hope I never will have to :)

As per the main point of this post, I do agree that towns should provide a easy way around if they block a main road way. But im really responding to answer some other questions and bring up a few arguments. :p

#1. Alot of ya'll have mentioned ironpass in ur posts and as a founder of ironpass i'll maybe help ya'll understand why we have the road as we do.

Ironpass' design was created to basically show off our town. When you go off in search of a city the main thing you see is how the town looks. We wanted a way for people to look upon the city but not be able to invade it. So we built our glass tunnle system. We also hoped to have markets available for people to shop in within the protection of our town. We try to keep the path safe to those traversing it but it is a hard job. Most of our leaders push citizens to not attack unless in defence. Well we all know that some people on this server just wont listen and since pvp gives such good xp they kill. I personally do all i can to prevent such issues but they do happen. If you have in the past killed one of our citizens and have gained some dislike then yes someone will kill u.

EDIT: Sorry but i half way lied, ironpass is on lockdown and the road through is clossed . sorry.

Also please realize that Ironpass has many people who don't like it. Not all of the people hanging out around us are our citizens nor are they freindly. I'm sorry if they catch u but we can't help it.

#2 As per matt's question, no the roads out of zeal were not server built. If you travel down the west road (torward ironpass) the original road from zeal ended just passed the DH Dragon. All of the road from the hill behind it to Ironpass was built by our citizens in the early days of the map. (Yes Zeal regens were extended from there to where they are now)

And this does bring up an argument one might have. If the roads are built by the towns then why should they have to accomodate other towns with the roads?

#3 as per fortehzz point. I would love to see the roads cleaned up but then some people do live in those houses. Thus greifing. A service like that would have to have staff help to decide what is being used and what is rubble on the side of the road.

PS. please remember that i speak from my own experiences and not for those whom i speak of

My opinion is it's the wilderness, if there is a road, great, if there isn't, deal with it.

Here's a sneak peek at District 101's new main road, notice the supports - I'm sick of seeing paths that magically float for miles across the landscape..

Haha, that's D101 security for ya - something we take a lot of pride in.

But if you ever fancy a tour give me a shout in-game, we'll happily show you around - just ignore the 10 guards surrounding you :p
