Future world wipes?

I wasn't here for the previous one, and my intent isn't to start doom and gloom talks, however with all of the new features being announced in 1.8:

Possible elevation up to 128, rivers in the world generation code, npc's with towns (not necc. for SMP), has there been any talk of how these will be incorporated into herocraft, if at all. And if it is even possible to continue on pre 1.8 worlds.
