The current crafting exp for creating iron and leather armor is shown bellow:
Iron Boots - 10
Iron Chestplate - 16
Iron Helmet - 10
Iron leggings - 14
Leather Boots - 4
Leather Chestplate - 8
Leather Helmet - 5
Leather Leggings - 7
Leather gives at most half the exp of its iron counterparts, however, leather is harder to acquire for most classes and sells for much more. Along with this as far as I know no class is limited to iron, but leather is sometimes an only option, but the exp values for it make it worthless to mass produce for your personal armory. Because I this I feel leather armor crafting should give exp equal or more than the current value for iron armor.
