The improved chat mod allows you to do keybinds, just use the following command:

~bind key msg

Example, I want to bind Q to sneak: ~bind q /skill sneak

you can go to the minecraft forums, they have a modding section there.

Most mod files go into the minecraft.jar, you do this by extracting the files into it by using a program such as WinRAR, it's pretty straight forward when you've done it once or twice.

Look, just use MagicLauncher, it is much easier than modding, and more configurable than downloading a jar that may or may not work. There are plenty of easy tutorials on how to use magiclauncher on the thread.
