    It's not a problem with HC, it's a problem with 1.7.2 itself. It happens for me in 1.7.2 single player, but if I roll it back to 1.6.4 it works fine, and if I update to 1.7.4 it also works fine.

    Suggestion Paladin Shields after 1.8

    The only way to make this work would be to either give doors a durability like a weapon/tool/armor so that it breaks after a certain number of hits, or if as you suggest taking a hit uses up the door, then the recipe for a door should give you multiple, like 6 iron bars gives you a stack of doors.
