    Put the jar downloaded from mediafire into the bin folder and rename the jar as minecraft.jar Replacing the minecraft.jar that was there to begin with. You should be able to start up fine after that.

    Try to do a force update without the actual usable jars in place and then replace the fresh jar. If not, there's something with your mods folder (probably not, but using a clean bin can be really helpful in these cases)
