    When you upgraded to 1.8.1 minecraft saves a "version" file in the bin folder, this tells the launcher when to update or not. So whether you use an alpha jar or whatever, it doesn't matter. When we get to 1.9, you could still play with 1.7.3 etc. Until notch changes the system this is how it's...
