    At the moment there's no way to default to party chat. Are you on the latest Java? You should have Java 7u17 installed.

    That would be why. Technic Launcher doesn't work on Java 7 for Mac OS X. Java 6 is required for Technic Launcher on Mac OS X, there's a video showing how to fix it:

    How are you unable to open Terminal? You can also try googling "Java version check online" and report back what version of Java you're using.
