Things that cause lag?

I would like to create as little lag as possible on this server, and so I would like to have a list of some of the things that cause lag. Do cactus farms cause lag? What about a 5-min redstone timer?

This is something that I handle on our backend. For the record, any kind of 'growing' can flux our tickrate, ie, cactus farms, massive shroom farms, icespread and yes, redstone is probably the sole indicator of massive spikes.
