Sometimes you don't get money killing certain mobs. You are likely to get coin from attacking and slaying: Creepers, Zombies, Spiders, Skellys and Endermen. You can get coin from killing animals, but you are not as likely to get some.

Your a caster right? Well unfortunately sometimes when you kill stuff with fireball it counts as a fire kill and not your kill so that's probably why your not getting any money from it. (correct me if I'm wrong)
Edit: Oh and for the advice on how to make money, mine like hell, get gold, and join a town so that you can sell your gold to the banker, mayor, or second in command.
