My IGN is thebowperson and well, I'm pretty much lost in HeroCraft. Not that I don't know where anything is - I actually do. I just don't know how to start off.
Like, am I supposed to just build a house randomly?
It's a stupid question, I know, but I would feel rude if I just go into a twon and start building.
I tried asking for help but the chat system is confusing. .-.
So, yeah.
Okay, thanks.

Your best bet is to ask a Guide. They will help you adjust to the server. If one isn't on just ask me, Im sure I can help.

About the chat System:

Type these In to join channels.

/ch o | This is the offtopic channel everyone can hear you here.
/ch t | The channel used for trade. Use this for offer on items for example "Selling Redstone 5c a stack"
/ch h | THis channel is for if you ever need any help just ask on this channel.

And "/ch list" for a list of channels.

This should help you http://herocraftonline.com/mybb/showthread.php?tid=748

A bit outdated but still very helpfull.

If I did my math right, then heres a fun fact: Herocraft has an area of approximately 7.5 sq miles.

My math might be off though....

Anywho, yea, like afro said, guides can be very helpful if you're new.

I think the best way to go about this is to go to the township forum and look at all the townships which catch your fancy. From those townships, join their chat channels and ask about the towns. When you get a feel for which one you like most, they will probably be happy to send you Herogate fee [Near the Spawn, the big black Obsidian thing] and a free [normally] 10x10. At that point you can probably go down to their tree farm, cut some trees down...and then go from there! In case you didn't see this a person can only be a citizen of one town at a time. However, you can have houses wherever you want so long as you negotiate price and plot with the towns in question.

Don't forget about /ch L | The local channel were only people near you may hear you.

Sanctum is 2500x2500, and if each of those is a metre, then it's 6.25 sq km, or about 2.4 sq miles.

Wouldn't you multiply that by 4 since there are negative quadrants?

Yes, yes you would, so its basically 5000 blocks, by 5000 blocks.

If the guides fail you, try joining /ch re (recruitment) and see if any townships will take you, sombody will. Then once you join a town, they will show you the world better than you could on your own.

All right, so yes, there are four 2500x2500 quadrants. Professor Math. The total area is 9.7 sq miles.
