Creepers do a lot more damage then that.
Actually I remember having full chain and 1 came up to me and I ran, It blew up 5 blocks away and I died at full health (76hp). Yet then after I got my stuff back and put the armor on a creeper came up behind me and blew up right next to me then I flew into another creeper that blew up in my face and only took 26 damage. Creepers are also capable of easily killing just about anything unarmored or at least gold armored.

Also spiders I believe have 20 hp now.
