So what exactly is Hamachi needed for? Wouldn't it just be easier to use the default method for connecting?

Hamachi is used because it's the alternate so that you don't need to forward ports for most games. For terraria however, it is more important. For some reason not many people at all can host a server that was just port forwarded unless they have a static IP. The change log for the newest version said it was fixed, but I haven't tested it yet. If it is, then hamachi is no longer useful.

Hamachi is needed because terraria was released a month early, and server setup was not made yet. It was released for single player. Steam server support will probably get released soon.

Very true. I've already beaten it.....and now the fun is gone.
