Bug Villagers safely in a residence disapear?

I had a group of villagers safely stored in my residence. They were perfectly safe locked in a house which was lit how could they have possibly been killed if the residence was working?

This happened to animals as well, I think they all got reloded at one point.
Spent an hour to lead some chickens back to my base. all gone now.

I'm guessing a server restart wiped them like Shadoram said.

Unfortunate, I think all the villagers on the server are already gone.

Villagers are not all gone, I have taken snapshots and they still exist.
(The ones in spawn are still alive from the start of the map)

We have not done a villager wipe. It is a special command that we haven't run.
Animals and villagers are separate entities.

I can only assume that something bumped them out of their region but unsure why..
