Total Noob Questions

Let me start by saying I am brand new to minecraft multiplayer

My son is actually 6 years old and loves the creative modes, build elaborate mansions, and got me into the survival mode

So we started, tried some servers, and have made it to Hero's which seems very impressive

So, a couple questions:

1. So I made it out of town, built a small house, mined, expanded to a medium sized cobble home, with chests and such, and then realized, is any of my stuff safe?? Can someone just come along and destroy what I did?

2. Can someone just rob my house since I cannot lock my chests?

3. How do I know if I have been whitelisted? I built a house, so I guessed that was it.

4. How do you change chat groups? I am in Tour, but cant chat (whitelisting??)

5. Is there a map? I just got outside of town to a snow area, would much rather live in a forrest or jungle

Thanks for any help, and sorry for the serious noob questions. I am an old WoW player, and Ultima player, and truly just got into MC

1: If you did this in Bastion, they can steal from your chests, but not grief your home and it means you are whitelisted. If you did this in Warshard or Forgelight, they can grief AND steal, but you could be whitelisted.

4: You have to be whitelisted to use chats other that Tour, such as /ch sh (shout) and /ch o (offtopic).
5:Use Rei's Minimap, it's an allowed mod.

2. Yes they can. (You could try joining a town if you want your stuff safe)
3. You could try talking in offtopic to test
4. Type /ch [channelname] to join a channel. For example /ch o. However unlike what Awsumguy stated you can talk in both Shout and local even if you're not whitelisted.
5. We don't currently have a Dynmap running at the moment but we plan to have one back up and running once we clear up the stability issues. But for the moment you could try using Rei's Minimap to help you keep track of where you've been.
