What is Kainzo’s Big Stick
Kainzo's Big Stick is an ancient artifact of immense power, infused with the energy and power of those exiled from the worlds of Sanctum and Zeal. It is said that merely touching the Stick can make a man a god; some believe the world of Zeal was born from its power. Should the Stick fall into the wrong hands, a world of nightmares would be let loose...
Chapter I: Into the Fire
"Diamonds!" said Tips, miner of New Demacia[1] (see footnotes at the end of the chapter). Tips stared at his prize, four diamond ores, from across a sea of lava deep under the earth. "I'll dig around the lake to it" said Tips to himself. He tunneled around the edge of the cavern, careful to avoid the magma lake. It took one full roation around the lake to realize the diamonds were on an island, surrounded on all sides by fiery lava. Then, he noticed four stones protruding from the lake, looking almost like the Trial by Fire spoken of in the old legends. "Perhaps" thought Tips "I could jump across."
Tips leapt from the rock on which he stoop on the lake's edge to a stone on the lake. He landed on it and, unscathed, jumped to the next stone. He repeated this again, but he misstepped and nearly fell into the lake. He jumped a third time and a fourth, safely making it to the rocky island in the lake. Tips proceeded to the diamonds and clutched his iron pickaxe. With ten strikes from his iron tool, the ores were smashed to bits, revealing four brilliant diamonds. He placed the stones in his pocket and started to walk back to his path off the island. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a spring of water flowing from some rocks. Using his pick, he made a channel
for the water to the lava, creating a bridge of obsidian across the lava.
He crossed and left the cavern via a mine shaft so he could return to New Demacia. He navigated the vast labyrinth of mines with ease. He had worked in the mines since he was a boy, and knew them well. He was skeptical they all fit under the Kingdom of Praxis. ''They'' said that all that was in the world was the Kingdom of Praxis, and that all else is the empty void. Yet, Tips could sense that was not true, that there was a world beyond the Kingdom, and it was his dream to explore it.
Halfway to New Demacia Tips found a vein of dirt, and dug into. In it he found his bag of ore, hidden from the other miners. A miner must spend twelve hours in the mine every day, or find 16 gold ore, 16 diamonds, or 64 iron ore to get the rest of the day off. Many miners would take a bag full of ore so they can get to their quota sooner. The four new diamonds made 17, so Tips was free to go home. He continued the trip to the city. After ten or so minutes, he arrived at the mine entrance.
"Your finds please" said the collector. Tips gave him 5 gold, 17 diamonds, 43 iron, 72 coal. He was allowed to keep his lapis lazuli, for blocks of lapis are the currency of his people. "Uh huh" said the collector. "Your pay is five." The collector gave him five lapis blocks. Tips walked a little further and entered New Demacia. New Demacia was a fairly small mining town, built in a cavern under an icy sea, with a huge glass roof, with maybe ten houses and three or four shops. Tips entered one of them.
It was a small wooden shack, with a cobblestone floor and walls adorned with woolen paintings. In the back of the room was the merchant Bob, a friend of Tips's. When he saw his friend, the bored expression on Bob's face faded away.
"Hey Tips, what can I get ya?" said the merchant.
"One mushroom soup please." The merchant pressed a button and went through an iron door into the back of his shop. He heard the sound of wood hitting against wood and he emerged with a steaming wooden bowl of soup. The aroma or warm, savory soup filled the air. He wiped a few stray drops of soup on his left hand on his apron, and handed it to Tips with the right.
"Two blocks please". He gave the merchant two lapis blocks. Normally, money was scarce, but he finished an unusually successful day of work early, and felt he should indulge.
The brownish colored mushroom soup was piping hot, but Tips began eating anyway. The soup would burn the mouth of most, but Tips was unaffected. His father had told him when he was young it was because he was Selected as a "Healer" at the Selection Ceremony. Selections generally don't mean much, except some "Crafters" go to the Capital city Praxis and some become Smiths that repair tools. Selections, for the most part, are not paid attention to much after being selected.
He sat down on a stone bench by the rail station. Demacians were not allowed to travel via the rail, and seldom did someone use it, although rarely a government official from Praxis comes through it. The sentry that was guarding the station approached Tips.
"You have been ordered to come to Shiroku by Governor Toadsworth. Please follow me." said the sentry. "This is not a not a request." The sentry walked back to the station and Tips followed him. The station was simple, a 3 yards high, one yard high whole in the rocky edge of the city. Two minecarts sat on the track, above a golden stretch of rail. "Sit." He said. Tips did as he said, sitting in the front cart, and the sentry sat in the cart behind him. He pressed a button on the wall and the golden track below them lit up, and propelled them to Shiroku.
[1]In the time since this writing, the dead town of Demacia [2], part of the Kingdom of Praxis, has been revived and is a mining town for the nation.
[2] A few days it was kinda worldedited out. I'll work it into it.
