Bug Smelting

When I started to smelt a stack of iron ore, I logged off for 2 hours, and when I logged in the stack of iron is still smelting. I'm not sure if this is suppose to be intentional or something with the new patch but it seems like the player has to be logged in for the smelting process to continue like in singleplayer.

This has been the case since early alpha multiplayer, the chunk has to be loaded in order for crops to grow and furnaces to smelt.
