why would you want to do that when you can just repair them using gravel?

When I first read this, I thought you meant combine two 'seperate' tools (diamond pickaxe and diamond shovel) and use them as one tool and the digging effects combined. :O

But, it's a nice idea.

I am also referring to what DoubleKiwi said, you can repair them using gravel, which is much more efficient.
