I'm trying to decide which profession to go with when I spec.

I like the idea of writing books and setting up a business as a publisher, but I also like being able to make tnt cannons, and I like mining.

Anyone have any experience with either know how useful they are?

If you have a friend that is miner then choose scribe so that you can write down all of your adventures. If you have a frend that is a scribe then choose miner. Are you the type of person who wants to be in the action or are you th type of person who would rather do something with less stress invloved? I voted for miner if you are wondering;)[DOUBLEPOST=1355635084,1355635015][/DOUBLEPOST]I hope that my advice will help you choose. :)

I know I have at least one friend who is a miner. If I do go scribe, I'll probably be the only one, since apparently scribes aren't perceived as being particularly useful.
Now that I think about it, I think I would also need an engineer to make cannons, yes? Or can plain levers and redstone be placed by anyone?

I suppose the important thing is: Can written books be sold in shops? I have a friend who plans to be an alchemist, so making the shop shouldn't be a problem (why is it that alchemists can make book shops, but not scribes?). I know that servers that use the Bookworm plugin (which is better than the built-in book and quill feature, imo) can have books be sold by setting the shop to sell books of a particular damage value, with the damage value corresponding to the book, but I don't know if that works with the vanilla book and quill system.
(I ask because I was hoping to set up a library/newspaper type place near spawn, or maybe in a town, someday)

Also, I remember being told that scribes had night vision as a passive ability, but I haven't been able to find any mention of this on the wiki. Is the wiki out of date, or was I lied to?

Trust me, Scribe is terrible.

Miner just got revamped recently--it's the better choice by far.

Well, you're a master scribe, so you must know what you're talking about. I'll have to get one of my lackeys to be a scribe and write books for me; I can just type up the contents out of game and have them paste them into the books regardless of who's doing the pasting.

What are the recent changes to miner? Is the wiki updated for them?

The smelt ore ability that gives miners a 20% chance at getting extra gold ingots when they smelt gold ore is what's driving everyone to miner right now. The night vision is pretty sweet too.

Miner will be the next profession I master for sure.

I thought the night vision thing was for scribes...

It would help if the wiki was updated for stuff like this.

It's a lot of work to keep the wiki updated, and there are a lot of patches. I know the wiki team is doing their best to work on it, but more help from the community would help I believe.

Ultravision is nightvision, at 35 or 40 I believe, and is long enough that you can keep it going indefinitely, but I'm not currently a miner so I can't test it.

Of course you could also use /hero skills
