Render Distance?

I have my render distance set to far but compared to the other map the render distance is sooooooo much shorter and many other people have confirmed they feel the same way. Is there any reason for this? is it client side (1.6.6) or a setting on the server?

Notch added a new Server Render Distance option and I believe Kainzo shortened it.

The less render distance - the less lag and better tickrates. Or so its said.
