Recent Changes in the War on Latency

I know this is a touchy subject but I am not posting to whine or complain, just note some recent observations. I think the staff have been doing a commendable job and putting alot of time into addressing the server latency issues. Infact, about two weeks ago, it honestly seemed like it was completely fixed to me. There were talks that the mob spawn plugin that prevented mobs from spawning below a certain level was causing a memory leak, but by simply resetting the server somewhat frequently, I was amazed to find there was no lag except for brief moments right before restarts. Everything was great and I was completely happy to deal with restarts every 4-6 hours (or whatever needed) to have no latency.

About a week and a half ago, something changed though. While i still have no latency when I am on in the early mornings (6-10AM est), in the evenings there is a new odd kind of latency that i had not experienced on the server before. Long ago, when latency was high, there would be a general delay in all ingoing / outgoing information, both from player to server and server to player. Now however, the server response to player is extremely delayed during peak hours. This is resulting in (example) say you are fighting a creeper. The creeper will appear 10 blocks in front of you, the latency will hit, and 3-5 seconds later once cleared, if you did not try to move, you will find the creeper has already exploded right next to you. This was most noticable during last nights last man standing event, when players would just randomly warp around in 5 second intervals. Most oddly, I play with my wife and older child, and when a latency spike hits after one of us have activated an ability, the other people in the house will get the notification of the action being completed before the original input user does.

Ultimately, I was just curious if anything major has changed with server plugins / infrastructure over the past week and if others are experiencing this issue as well. I was so very happy the previous week with latency being near non-existant, and wanted to provide feedback that things seemed to have changed for the worst, at least for me and my family.

Things we've changed:
  • Removed the mob-spawner plugin that blocks below 60=y
  • Updated to Latest Bukkit/Spigot/Libigot

Well, i know it was indicated that this issue is kinda out of servers control, but just wanted to note latency has been great all week (from Monday July 1 - Thursday July 4), just incase it helps run down any coding / bugs that may cause issues
