Howdy folks, I'm posting this as a discussion to hopefully clear up some of my own ignorance as well as to help improve everyone's experiences on the server. I am new to MC multiplayer and to this server. Since I joined the server just after the map wipe I have not had a chance to get to know many of you. I've built 3 different bases so far. I've placed signs out to indicate that they were claimed. I've been raided mercilessly and I am ok with that. What I am not ok with is having my bases destroyed in addition to being raided. Thus I pose my questions to the server at large. "What do you consider raiding? What to you consider griefing?" I consider raiding to be logging in to find that my chests are all empty. If the raider is somewhat kind, leave me a message. Tell me to better hide my stuff, he'll send me a message to chat with me and help me learn more. Want to raid me more than once? Go for it, let me know sorry you still suck at hiding your valuables. But when it comes to destroying my walls (read entire sections of wall), removing my light sources, filling in rooms that I dug out, stealing my food, flooding my base with water or lava, that just being a d-bag and an immature little child. That I consider griefing. Things like that will cause other players to say hey this place sucks guess ill move to another server. It lowers the enrichment of this server.

Now I don't want this to turn into a flame war and I hope that, again, this brings fruitful discussion about the differences between raiding and griefing so please post your thoughts and be kind to your fellow players.

what about a 3rd category? looting.

raiding is typically just going to a town with the hopes of killing people.

griefing is destroying blocks on structures that have been claimed. if you find anyone has done this, just open a pe and that player will likely be banned. I don't know a single player who would excessively grief like you have mentioned, so I assume those who do it, are just noobs themselves who have no intentions of lasting on the server and just want to cause as much trouble as possible before they get banned because I would never think that anyone who plays the server for more than a month, or joins a town, would destroy blocks or structures so recklessly.

griefing is griefing, so you should just pe and get those assholes banned. raiding and stealing is part of the game however, and i don't leave signs suggesting to better hide your things, because it's something you should already know. That being said, I don't usually look for hidden chests, and people who find them are usually x-raying.

Fuzy, which map is this happening on?

On Ruins, griefing is legal and you've no comeback.

But on Haven, griefing is most definitely against the rules. As Miners has just posted (before I got my response in), you need to petition the grief by standing at the site of the grief when you open the /pe - and don't make any changes there before you do (or after). I understand you won't be told who did the griefing, but the offender will be dealt with which will benefit the server community as a whole.

Raiding is getting into the town and killing but mainly the purpose is to acquire valuables.

Griefing is breaking/placing blocks with the intention to ruin buildings and terrain.

Its true. most players are just pvp d-bags here just to grief and harass the good people of herocraft, What you want to do is find a friendly town that can offer some security. Other then that there is really no way to prevent the griefing, last map as mayor of underworld I gave up on making petitions concerning the griefing outside my town cause it basically was everyday. Don't judge the entire server though on the actions of these griefers, they will always be here and on other servers as long as there is an internet.

@WitchOnaRampage this is happening on Haven, however I've already abandoned the 2 of the bases this happened at, and repaired the damage to the 3rd. If I log in this evening and find that it has happened again ill definitely submit a pe.

@I_Love_Miners well I counted looting in with raiding but ill certainly keep them separate in the future. As for signs telling me to hide my stuff better it was more of a joke or a taunt. Either of which is cool, im just more ticked about the griefing in addition to looting. I mean take my stuff, sure it sucks but I can get more so no hard feelings.

I appreciate all the responses, I feel rather vindicated knowing I wasnt just being a noob about it. Guess I just have a thing for MMO etiquette being a long time game and 10 year MMO veteran on other games

I wish the anti griefing could just be enforcable though more / cheaper regioning tools, i am sure i have accidently griefed many areas people had signs up without even knowing because it is hard to see every sign in the world without the person turning the area into a giant advertising board basically. Maybe not all regions should be fully protected regions, but instead the blocks inside can only be permanently modified by the region owner and people on his permission list - anyone else who makes changes will have them undone through world regeneration over five minutes or something. I know the tnt mod was going to introduce this but it may have fallen by the wayside.

This would also help with the hilarious situation of raiders having to return to remove 1 block pillars from outskirts of towns or face punishment. The pillars would just naturally degenerate.
