Bug Lava Bukets

When I have a bucket of lava with me, whenever I recall the lava inside the bucket dissapears. Is this a glitch, or am I just stupid and missing something obvious?

Does the lava reappear after a certain time?
Have you tried placing it?

Sometimes when I am mining a block at the end of a picks life, the pick disappears, then reappears when I try to use it again.
