I have been using a Unbreaking III Fortune III Efficiency IV pickaxe.
When I am mining and breaking blocks drops from the mined block will despawn if not picked up before breaking a block of the same type.

I.e.
A block of iron is broken.
If i do not collect the iron from that block before breaking another block of iron.
The drop from the first block will despawn.

Havent tested to see if this is do to Efficiency or Fortune. ( I would assume its not unbreaking)
Or possibly the combination of both.

Are you sure that you are not confusing the despawning with the new plugin that makes dropped items of the same kind combine into one stack? If you look, after all of the iron goes away and one block is left, that last block should be a stack containing all of the other blocks mined when you pick it up.
