Combat problems

I am aware this problem has been bring up in the wiki, but I want to ask this again:
IS　THERE ANY WAY TO MAKE THE COMBAT IN THE GAME SMOOTHER?
I know you can bind skill to an item, its useful but its just not very smooth in combat by just using one skill only.
I know there's impoved chat mod, but it's still not updated to minecaft 1.3.2 yet
and spoutcraft is just too laggy to play on.

SO, is there any other ways to make the combat easier?
If there is(probably not), I believe people will be really appreciated
If not, then, i guess Im just have to deal with it.
