Does it really matter?

Lol. Matter. Higgs Boson. Get it?

Anyway, it's one of those 'big picture' things that may not feed or shelter people tomorrow, but will have overarching and lasting influences on the way we do physics from now on if this is confirmed to be true. Better understanding of physics = new technology in the future with an unpredictable assortment of applications.

Well I do understand this. I still think that current technology we possess should be used to solve many of our issues, instead of hoping and investing on something new in the future that could assist us. We have the ability to tackle most problems we see today, I wish people would invest money more into that. :( But alas...

Yeah, I was reading this up in December.
I watched the conference, Peter Higgs was crying, Nobel prize for that boy.
Anyway, here is a short explination if you are too lazy to read.

The Higgs boson, is described as the ''God particle'' it in basic terms gives mass to subatomic particles, it's a huge discovery, on par with Gravity. This can really push our tech advances further.
Anyway, read up on the Boson field too, very interesting!

Zactly!
Not in the immediate future , but someday you "could" possibly use a Higgs field to provide a shelter which nothing could pass through. Change the way we grow food - sky farms for example.
It's hard to say right now though. It's like trying to figure out what you can use and engine for when Steam power was first invented, but the is many times more profound and reaching (and steam power was a BFD!).

Imagine creating a Higgs field around a ship. No solar radiation will reach you inside, asteroids pose no threat and with almost zero force you can instantly travel the speed of light.
Good times! :)

Your suggestions sound a bit science-fictionally to me.

lol - A lot of things from science fiction 80 years ago is science fact now.

Investing, like I said, in things which could potentially aid us (advancing us to the ''science fiction'' times), is not as sustainable and reliable as using what we have today. If we wait on future technology, we could easily reach a time in which some issues are unsolvable (take our climate, for instance).

Doesn't matter, our sun will burn out eventually or we'll deplete our planet's resources. We should be focusing on finding a new home :p
