Some of you wanted to see my submission to a magazine that is publishing me. Its a bit long, but I think they will accept it.

A cold breeze passed by a man, forcing his light brown hair to blow in the wind. The dry, stale air stung in his nose as he stood before a large ice cavern dressed only in leather clothing. At his sides were two short swords, placed comfortably in their sheaths. Below the man was a mountain constructed of pure ice; the man stood upon a pillar like platform that was at the bottom of an icy staircase that lead to the cave's entrance. Behind him was his ship, one used to traverse space.
This man was once considered a human being, but after Earth decayed into nothing, he had to consume a substance known as arcane dust to survive. This turned him into something that many would have considered a super being. Arcane dust is what makes up everything and anything in the world; it is what scientists considered matter. However, arcane dust contains magical properties to create anything it wants, at any given time. It also contains the ability to imbue powers into anything already created.
Victor, the man, had gained the ability of conjuring flames from the dust. This was the reason he wore such light clothing on top of an icy mountain without shivering at all.
After Victor searched the entrance with his blue eyes, making sure it was safe, he heard a sound of someone crying. This gave him a reason to rush in before thinking. At a fast pace, he bolted up the stairs and entered the cave to find a vast area of pillars that lead to a pure black throne. In front of the throne was a girl that looked to be only eight years old with long blond hair, dark green eyes and was dressed in light clothing that resembled sleepwear. Floating above her was a woman that had hair that reached past her feet, with a color that matched the ice around her. Even her clothing was a light blue color that was just as icy as the room. It became apparent that the woman intended to harm the girl and without any warning, icicles that seemed to form out of thin air, were transcending upon the little girl.
Victor reacted and his instincts sent him running towards the small child about to be crushed.
"Watch out!" he yelled as his foot lost its grip of the floor.
Victor was now sliding towards the two females. In his mind he knew he would slow down if he didn't propel himself somehow. Remembering his power, Victor increased his body heat and made the ice melt, giving him just enough speed to slide under the icicles and grab the girl. They slid a little more until the throne acted as their brakes. Screams emanated from the woman as her blank eyes focused on Victor. She was furious with rage from the rescue.
Quickly, Victor slid the girl behind the throne and braced his hands at his sides, on his swords' hilts, readying himself for a fight. The ground started to shake slightly as a spike of ice shot forth from beneath Victor. He managed to dodge the sneaky attack, but did not escape unharmed. He had a large vertical gash on his left leg. Victor clenched his teeth in pain, clutching at the wound. The woman formed a shard of ice in her right hand and slowly floated towards him. With a great force, she thrust the shard, aiming for Victor's chest.
Victor let go of his leg, bending back up to his feet and unsheathed his blades. As they slid out into a slash, the ice dagger was shattered. In succession he used his right leg to push forwards and pierce the woman's heart. He retracted the swords to see only black blood on the blade that had ended the woman's life. Her body slowly became ice then dropped abruptly to the ground and shattered into millions of sparkling shards.
"Are you alright?" asked Victor as he held out his hand to help the girl up.
"..." silence was the only answer the girl gave.
"Do you have a name?" continued Victor.
Off in the distance a sound of wings flapping could be heard. Soon enough a loud crashing noise was emitted from the entrance to the cavern.
"She has no name, for useless objects do not deserve a name!" spoke a voice that sounded old and raspy.
Victor lifted his head to see a hooded man riding on a dragon that was completely pitch black with red eyes.
"What? How can you say that? Do you know this little girl?" questioned Victor.
"Yes, I know her and she is a bad omen! She contains a dangerous power that could end the universe itself!" answered the old man.
"That makes no difference; I won't allow you to forsake a little girl just because you think she will end something as large as an entire universe!"
Victor grabbed the girl and picked her up. The rage, which was clearly visible in the man, made him force the dragon to spew flames wildly through out the cavern. The entire cave of ice started to melt and before too long, a hole was formed. Victor started to slide downwards towards this hole and eventually was forced to take a leap of faith. With the girl in his arms, Victor knew that they both would not survive the fall and he swung around to break the fall for her.
"Are they alive?" asked a woman's voice.
"Yes they are both breathing," spoke another woman's voice.
"Get them back to the healer, the male is bleeding!" screamed a man's voice.
Victor awoke in a wooden house's second story. Beside him, to his left, was the girl he had saved and to his right was four others. Three women, two looked to be in their teens and the other looked to be elderly. The other person was a teenaged boy.
"I am glad to see you are awake, I am Erin, the village healer. These three are, Julia, Nina and Harry, my grandchildren," greeted the elderly woman with a smile.
"I'm Victor..." replied Victor with confusion. In his mind he was going over what he was told about the planet. It was supposed to be barely inhabited. He fit in an answer before asking out loud that they must have inhabited the planet over the years it took him to travel there.
"And who might the beautiful little girl be?" asked Julia.
"..." Again, the girl spoke no words and just stared blankly at Julia.
"She has no name I assume?" wondered Erin.
"How about Tera?" asked Nina.
Victor was about to disapprove the name, when the little girl smiled and nodded in approval.
"Well if you like the name, I guess its fine," assured Victor.
Victor attempted to stand up, only to find he had a large cut on his back which restricted him from moving because of the pain.
"Don't move! You must heal," commanded Erin.
Victor only replied with a sigh. In the only window inside the room it was clearly night time.
"Get some sleep and tomorrow we will see how your wounds are," explained Erin.
Victor slowly drifted off to sleep yet again. The next day, he awoke to the scent of freshly cooked breakfast. Without thinking, he stood up and walked down the stairs. Both wounds he had were gone mysteriously. Turning around the corner, his view sighted Erin.
"What did you do to my wounds that made them heal over night?" Victor was aiming his thoughts at the Arcane Dust, but was unsure. Erin only smiled and nodded to the food laid out on the table.
"Is that for me?" asked Victor with a dumb tone in his voice.
"Yes, now eat up," spoke Erin in a motherly way.
Victor pulled out an old wooden chair, sat down and quickly ate the meal before asking another question, "Have you ever heard of a hooded man who rides on a black dragon?"
"Yes, Grenald of the Shadows is his name and he is a very evil and twisted man. Why would you ask about such a man?" replied Erin in a concerning tone of voice.
"He melted an entire cavern of ice, sending Tera and I into a freefall," answered Victor with a slight laugh, "He said something about her being a bad omen of some sort."
"Then my assumptions were correct. You don't have much time; he will seek you out once he catches word that you survived. You must take Tera and flee from here," warned Erin in a panic.
"If he does find us I will just defeat him in battle," gloated Victor.
"No, you are just a human; he not only carries what powers that dragon has, but his own powers that allow him to bend the shadows to do his bidding. Your only chance is to tame a dragon, but even then, you would have to train for years just to learn how to do that," explained Erin with concern.
"Well I never planned a permanent stay on this planet, if he wishes to fight, I will fight. However I am not stupid. If I must tame a dragon, I will," retaliated Victor with an assuring glance towards the window.
"Alright, then if you wish to risk your life taming a dragon without any knowledge, I can't stop you. Up on the cliff to the East is a lair that is rumored to have a dragon living in it. That is your best bet," Erin told Victor this piece of information with a stressful sigh, "For the time being, I can watch over Tera."
"Thank you. I promise to return with that dragon!" promised Victor with the pride of his youth.
Thus, the young 28 year old man known as Victor set out to tame a dragon without any knowledge of how to do so. The walk to the cliff took about one day and the climb took approximately half a day. Once perched in front of the cave, Victor set up a small camp where he spent the night. As soon as the morning sun arose, he set out into the lair.
The entrance of the cave connected to a path that was a hard squeeze. After about a thirty minute walk, Victor eventually made it to a clearing inside of the cave. The dimly lit cave was extremely hard to navigate in such lighting. With his power of fire, Victor created a small torch out of his hand by holding some flames. Now inside of his vision was a giant stone statue of a bird. Shortly after Victor's discovery, a small shaking feeling forced him to stumble.
"Who dares to set foot into the great shrine of Ignis Avis?" spoke a deep and monstrous voice that echoed throughout the entire cave.
"My name is Victor, I came in search of a dragon," answered Victor with confusion.
Slowly Victor turned to see a giant Minotaur standing in the exit of the cave. The Minotaur let out a growl and charged at Victor. In defense, he pulled out both of his swords and squinted his eyes to gain his vision without the fire. The Minotaur swung a large war hammer made of stone into the ground just in front of Victor. With instincts alone, he leapt to the side of where he felt the hammer land and stuck out his swords into a stab attempt that made contact with the brute. After a few moments of silence, the cave illuminated itself with torches.
"You pass," spoke the Minotaur whose skin was perfectly fine, "Your great perception has pleased Ignis Avis and she wishes to speak to you in person."
As the big furry monster finished his small speech, the stone bird turned into a flaming bird; a Phoenix.
"Bravo, bravo! I haven't ever seen a human with such skills as your own! They don't usually act well in the dark for some reason," complimented the Phoenix in an accent similar to that of a British man.
"Uh thanks?" replied Victor in confusion. Ignoring the disturbing accent the bird had, Victor continued and stated his reason for being there, "I came here to tame a dragon, but it seems only a Phoenix lives here."
"So what, us Phoenixes are better fliers!" bragged the Phoenix.
"You would help me?" asked Victor.
"Well, you see, I can't. If I was to leave Herald here all alone, he would get lonely," admitted the Phoenix.
"Ignis, you may help the boy, just don't forget about me here," spoke Herald the Minotaur.
"Uh, fine how long will this take?" wondered Ignis.
"I'm sure by now the man looking for me, has figured out that I survived, so only a few days at the most," assured Victor.
Ignis lifted Victor and placed him on his back. The flames did not hurt Victor due to his own power. With only a short good bye, Victor and Ignis set off. The cave's roof had opened up allowing them to fly free. In about only a quarter of a day, they arrived at the village just a bit after noon.
Carefully, Ignis landed in a nearby clearing in the trees near the village. Many of the town's people came to see the humongous Phoenix.
"I didn't bring a dragon back, but this should suffice," said Victor to Erin who was coming into view.
"So it wasn't a dragon after all? Funny that such a rare animal was nesting there instead. Well good job, you should now stand a chance against Grenald," replied Erin, "Come back to the house soon, I bet you didn't eat on your journey."
The rest of the day went by peacefully. Children danced in joy of getting to meet a Phoenix and Tera played with the kids as the themed their games after the bird. However, once it became dark out, the children had to return home.
In the distance, roars of a dragon could be heard.
"Its Grenald, he is flying over the village now!" shrieked Julia as she shook Victor.
Victor didn't stop to talk as he jumped up and headed for Ignis. Erin didn't even attempt to stop him. With his swords ready and Ignis awake, Victor set off into the sky.
"This time we fight on even grounds!" shouted Victor.
"Don't be so ignorant!" Grenald shouted back.
The two circled each other shooting flames back and forth. Ignis flew in close and dangerously leaned to the left to allow Victor to slash at the dragon Grenald was riding. His blades only slid across the hard scales leaving hardly a scratch. Looping back around, Grenald attempted to engulf Victor and Ignis in darkness. The light being emitted from Ignis' flames prevented the attempt. This also left Grenald wide open. Sweeping to the right, Victor leaped from Ignis and aimed his blade to strike Grenald in the torso. As his sword neared its destination, Grenald pulled a small dagger from under his cloak and drove it into Victor's chest.
Victor then fell from the sky and landed in the village's town square. Erin took a place by Victor's side and started to try and heal his wound. Within seconds, Grenald had landed and stepped off his dragon. He swung his arm and knocked the old healer to the ground. With his power of shadows, he lifted Victor into the air and forced him to look into his eyes.
"All you had to do was kill the girl, or let me do it. Now you have this innocent village and your own life wasted!" threatened Grenald, "But first, I will end your life for delaying my work!"
While Grenald was carrying out his speech he was also making Tera, who was only a few feet away, angry. She didn't like the fact that he was threatening her friends.
Grenald took out his dagger again and jabbed it towards Victor's heart. Only an inch from Victor, the dagger stopped involuntarily. Tera had a purple eye appear on her forehead that lit up the entire square with the same purple tint. Grenald was tossed into the fountain, which was located directly in the middle of the square, by a telekinetic force.
Even with such a wound, Victor leaped to his feet and grabbed one of his swords from the cobblestone road. Blood spattered on the ground as he stumbled over to the fountain. Grenald sat up from his position in the fountain to meet a sword that was drove into his neck. Victor fell backwards and instantly drifted into a coma.
After two days of rest and healing, Erin finally awoke Victor from his coma.
"What happened?" asked Victor in panic.
"You saved us all from Grenald," replied Erin.
"Oh wait, where is Ignis?" questioned Victor.
"He told us to tell you he went to see Herald," answered Erin.
To Victor's left was Tera with a massive smile and tears flowing from her eyes as she gave Victor a large hug.
Even though his main goal still existed on the planet, Victor had managed to save a village and a little girl. He just lay back in his bedding, freeing himself from Tera's binding and slept for another day. Upon his consciousness the next day, he was all ready to set out with Tera by his side.
