Animals per Chunk

I thought the animal limit was per animal type per chunk, but when I tried to breed some cows in the same chunk (on a level above) my sheep I got the chunk limit message. Can I get a clarification from Admins that the animal limit is total passive animals per chunk or per animal type per chunk ? Thanks

As a farmer I can say that it is all passive mobs on one chunk can only =20 unless you breed to 20 and then spawn (through skills) more.

It's 20 at the moment, for everything passive-wise.
