... that I was in for an exciting time.
I've read A LOT about this server on your own forums and it only made me more and more excited until I just couldn't resist applying. So I did. And I got on first thing this morning to start my new ADVENTURE. Turns out Herocraft's definition of adventure is different than mine.
I understand that Herocraft is a community already well-built and doesn't need new players as much as other servers. It is a very large server that can easily shrug off a player quitting, especially if new. Life will go on as if the player was never there. However, what I experienced is absurd, and what I read about after my experience is far worse.
I asked the people online what the best way to get started was. After a chat, I was directed to.... Warsomething. I went there and began to admire the scenery and architecture. After a good hike down the road in search of unprotected trees to punch (which I was already upset about having to do), I begin to take damage. Upon turning around, I see a player, a flash of lighting, and a game over screen. I think to myself, "Maybe he's a bandit I was supposed to know about?" and respawn to see a message from him reading, "Welcome to Herocraft!" I reply, "Way to go low, there," and later think that it might just be some tradition to absolutely own a noob when he first joins the server.
Irritated, I make my long hike again, this time watching my back every few seconds like someone's out for my head. I find a tree!!!....... but it's antigriefed. Back to the hike. I find a small forest. I punch down a tree and some leaves and replant a sapling. I notice it's getting dark outside, so I craft a wooden pick and head into a nearby cave that someone else had kindly left torches in for me. I dig out a small chunk and craft a stone sword, pick, and axe, and head back outside, feeling pretty well-armed. I find a creeper and beat its face in. Okay, more like poke it and run away until it stops moving. I go back to the road in search of a place to settle to find another creeper. Same story. I'm a level 3 now! YAY. I think to myself, "I'm well on my way to killing that griefer I saw earlier," before encountering a creeper and two spiders. Analyzing the situation, I back up two steps and they are out of sight range to attack me. Then I hear a hiss. After a brief moment of panic and an attempt to run... I'm dead. Again. I think, "Okay... that was my own fault," and respawn.
More irritated that I've now actually lost items AND my level 3 from this experience, I find that I've respawned in a new location. One not so friendly. I'm immediately put up against a skeleton and a spider. At level 2. With no items. I die swiftly and log out of the game.
I check the forums to see what people are up to and discover a post called "I'm disappointed," written by someone who thinks like I do, but whose name did not leave a mark on my memory. I read it to find out some other noob had an experience even worse than mine! Multiple players constantly killing him while another tried desperately to help him.
I then decide to tell my own story.
My advice to you, Herocraft community... Make a more noob-friendly server, unless your goal is to drive away any and all new traffic and stick to the core community. If that's your goal, well done indeed. I know that the theme seems to be fend for yourself. That's the same on my home server. But we give people a chance to make it. Either lower the difficulty a degree, give us a starting set (or just money for that matter), or just MAKE A N00B-ONLY WORLD. Restrict it by level or something, if you can, or have a moderator watch its traffic. I'm currently having more fun on a nearly vanilla server than I am on your very innovative, very well-constructed server.
Until your ways are changed, you have lost my respect, my esteem, and my attendance to your server. And to think I thought I was in for an exciting time.
