Well, due to various things IRL, I haven't had either the time or the will to play Herocraft for a while, but I've been sitting on an unofficial statistic I occasionally referred to in the in-game chat. I know I promised to post it about two weeks ago, but real life can be a greater time suck than Minecraft sometimes; but here it finally is, enjoy: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AuHYz-aTOn9rdEF0elcySEFtWXVwRFN0bFd6YzdrN2c
I created the statistic by going online at the times indicated if I already wasn't online, then, one-by-one, doing /hero who <classname>'s and writing down how many of them there were. I am well aware of its inconsistencies and possible inaccuracies, such as the fact that Minecraft chat can only display 20 lines at a time, or the fact that some people might have logged on or off while I was writing down the numbers, or the fact that I, being a Rogue, contributed to the Rogue numbers even if I was not actually playing (ie., I only came online to do the statistic), or the fact that some days got more intervals at different time periods, or that a player, whose name began with "ninja" single-handedly made the amount of ninjas on the server impossible to get while they were online (/hero who ninja returned their stats, rather than a list of all ninjas online), etc.
The reason I made this statistic was to illustrate the need for remaking, but not rebalancing, some classes to make them more interesting, and therefore more popular. For example, even though Kainzo and others consider the Beguiler very powerful, the general lack of Beguilers hints that many don't realize its potential for some reason or another.
I would also request that some sort of statistic function be built into Herocraft server-side, as, IMO, statistics such as these would help a lot with balancing and would provide a valuable source of community feedback even from the mute players. Statistics could range from ones like mine (dumping the number of players online from each class into a txt every hour) to more sophisticated ones (for example, like the amount each skill is used within each class), the important part is they be there, possibly for everyone, but at least for the coders to see.
