    Why would it be multiplied? He isn't gaining down syndrome two-fold, he is just adding on another down syndrome.

    Syndrome = S Down is usually related to "under" or "below". There are negative numbers below 0 Down = - So, if he has (- S) + (- S) it is the same as (- S - S) That would technically be (-2S) Meaning he has double down syndrome.
