If theres a big enough faction of players who think the direction is wrong, I wanted something more concrete, so im making a new thread for ideas/etc to be here.
Here's the copy and paste from his quote, more or less - some things are "very" subjective that either need clarifaction or programming.

Server Ruleset
  • Strong Community
    • Active and Helpful Staff (Guides / messaging new players, etc - being recognized for their time and effort)
  • Tag based gameplay to dictate their play style (Town/PVP?)
  • Veterans don't gank newbies who indictate they are new/not wanting to PVP
  • Structured/Objective PVP events (Free For All / Team / Gambling Duels / Mob Arenas and Tourney Bracket
  • Heavy rule enforcement
    • Heavy handed staff with enforcement of rules and encouraging players to play fairly.
    • Anti-hacking/Banning Hackers
  • No toxicity, black and white rule approaches
  • New communities allowed to flourish when they come onto the server
  • Constant map spiffing and resources regenerated by architects (or programmatically)
  • Players don't pollute map
  • Towns are competitive but understand new players are resources not fresh meat.
  • Constant videos and streaming via the Herald team and are thusly rewarded and praised.
  • Lag free gameplay.
  • Simple class system (no attributes) yet intense combat
  • Plethora of classes that are overpowered paradoxically but go against each other fairly
  • Individual Summoner spells?
  • Map is everchanging
  • Fresh content (new arenas/new stakes/new classes)

Anyways, I have a vision of Herocraft. One built upon a strong community. A new player logs in, he’s clueless but immediately he’s being messaged invitations and guidance. He chooses a tag to decide his direction that will be next to his name, a title that says whether or not he is looking for a town or is participating in pvp. The new player feels welcome by the community, when he sees the veteran groups running around, the veterans do not gank him or fuck with his stuff. They help him grow. They invite them to their own town or lead them into a newbie town where there are similar minded people trying to figure things out. The vets leave other people alone and keep their shenanigans to themselves, reserving the butt raping for the nightly free for all/team events, gambling duels, mob arenas, and occasional tourney. Being part of this community is exclusive, there are rules, if you do not comply you do not get to enjoy. Admins and moderators will be different, constantly reminding people of the direction and light that the server is headed, they will hound the cheaters, and show that the penalties are very black and white, gray areas no longer. There is a standard for this community, and the unfit can find a different one. There is no room for negativity here, think of this as the olympics of Minecraft. The best pvpers, builders, and groups have come together, with new ones being allowed to rise. The map is constantly being spiffyed up and resources put back by architects. The players know the map is sacred, like earth, they do not pollute, they are environmentally friendly. Towns are outstanding with competitiveness being at an all time high, demonstrating massive cooperation, and maintaining pride in how they carry themselves and their town name. They know that new players are a resource, the foundation for a stronger pvp base. Heralds are constantly putting out videos, showing off their bases, battles, and events. Lag is gone, no more. Attributes are gone. All classes are overpowered paradoxically unfair yet fair. Combat is intense. There are a lot of classes, and like league of legends everyone gets a individual “summoner spells” of their choosing to be used with any class. Novelty is constant, the map in flux. New environments are being introduced by architects. Towns will have their own battle arenas to invite and hold duels. Some of the old towns from bastion are used as mobarenas and pvp duel arenas. Competitions are held at these old towns or current towns. The current champion holds the tourny at his towns own arena. Towns pride themselves on their town, their mob arena, and their pvp arena. Daily life is made interesting because there are always new classes, new arenas, and new stakes. Towns may gamble their town and levels as a stake. Ultimately the community enjoys seeing itself grow, but it enjoys more seeing the noob that couldn’t hold his pants up, now being the large dicked diamond sword swinger.

I believe some systems reinforcing the old politics players propagated in the past could go a long way. Politics is one of the elements that was under appreciated but really hurt the server when it fell away. Honestly, it only collapsed because the township plugin shift killed the systems allowing the original player run system, and I'd like to see it come back. I can say from personal experience many of the players in the Order of the Sun kingdom only logged in daily to keep the kingdom alive for the other players. Perhaps some land and resource advantages for maintaining alliances and large kingdoms could aid in player retention, especially if they don't want to PvP 24/7.

Edit: I'd happily develop again for this server if I am allowed to implement the ideas the players agree on in full.

Well, the way I see it, if theres enough people wanting a pvp ruleset server, I have no problems pushing in time and effort in making it happen. Would need all the help we could get too.

I think Townships has more work to be done but is a great basis for what we want. Its coded well and doesnt lag and has a lot of room for improvements via API.

Whatever the new map is, please don't make the spawn a big ass Maze. I think this will turn off new players and leave them confused to start off with.

The spawn should be simple yet elegant. (Personally I love the spawn back in like 2014 when depth strider was added( I think Valorium, or Citadel?))

Just out of curiosity, what's the goal of making this server? To appeal to the nostalgia crowd by going to an older version or to just throw us into an arcade type of server and we can just pick our classes and brawl. Unfortunately I don't think either option would work in pulling back in people at this point.

At this point, you should be telling us what you're going to do for the server. I typed this up in 15 minutes, and I've decided I'm not going to be wasting my time for fruitless efforts. Did you really just copy paste my post and not add anything to it? What are you doing with your time? This is a crucial period. You should appeal to the older crowd in a way that says, hey this server has everything you guys want. I'm sorry I didn't listen but here you go. Here's your server with a shit ton of new classes, old town ruins world edited into the map for arenas, or for the duel plugin. Let us visit the past a bit, give us a reason to come back or better yet a lot of reasons. Everything I told you is so simple, you should know how to give us what we want. You know what our options are, and If I can think of ways to appeal to the crowds you certainly should too. This shit is getting so old, love waits? what a fucking joke dude do something.

As I stated, this is a hobby for me, I have RL shit that takes priority. This hasnt paid the bills in several years, I'm sure you understand how one person, who runs this as a hobby, asking for help from the people who are saying they want something, isn't a new or unrealistic thing.

I paraphrased your wall of text for others I comment.
Get real with your expectations and grow up.

I don't think it will, there's fierce competition out there for servers - people that still play Minecraft on random servers are doing so because of the community and friends they've made.

What I'm hearing is, "Tell me what you guys want"

Some tell you want they want...

Then I also hear from you afterwards, "As I stated, this is a hobby for me, I have RL shit that takes priority." and "Get real with your expectations and grow up."

If you think some of our expectations are too high, then don't bother asking. You never did before, not sure why you are now. Like I said, you are better off working with whatever Herocraft currently is and making updates to it probably, or just sharing/selling the hero code with someone who can do something with it. That's something that we have been hoping you'd do for awhile, but that is your choice and obviously not up to us.

One person giving input about a new server (or return to an older version) isnt enough to base work around.
It's insane to hold me accountable for all of your block game fun. It's unrealistic and very selfish.

When I made a post to get feedback from other like minded players, there's no input. So the person I quoted this thread from is upset his following isnt here to back him? or I didnt create a new server based on his rambling in a few weeks? Riiiiight.

We have people working on a new version of Herocraft, properly balanced - it takes time, we're not bringing in shit money and something has to pay the bills.

I don't want to get involved in all the arguing but I will share my opinion. It's tough talking about how to get Herocraft back to having a good community when a bunch of the members of the older community have gotten a few years older and have different priorities. For instance, I spent hours back on Bastion, and the map after that (I'm unsure of the name), mining and leveling and messing around with my friends, but now I'm in college and have that to worry about and I've also picked up so new hobbies like playing the guitar and working out which all takes time. Even if Herocraft got back to having a steady strong player base I doubt I would put near as much time into it as I once did and I feel like a lot of the older players have gone through a similar change. That being said, I do have two things that I really enjoyed, although I'm not sure if the majority of players now or in the old community agree with me.

These two things are:

1. The smaller overworld dungeons (most had pvp enabled but some did not if I remember correctly) with regular mobs. I don't know which map it was but I absolutely loved the map with little dungeons scattered across the over world. Some were pretty lengthy and took a bit to get into and learn and others were super simple and small. I remember going to a small one in a desert with magma cubes super close to spawn and having an absolute blast. I loved leveling there even though I was regularly ganked by people. Eventually I could fight off the people and I even became friends with some of the people who killed me over and over. There were also plenty of players I met there and we decided to level together. I'm not sure if most people are like me (I'm sure many are not) but I enjoyed the threat and when I couldn't defend myself, I would ask in chat for help and people would almost always come and help me whether I knew them or not. I bonded with both the people ganking and helping me. xD And once I got a better grasp on the heroes plugin and pvp I started to help people who were lower level and getting ganked like I used to. (The life cycle of Herocraft players, getting ganked until you learn to gank :p) (I'm sure this concept could be improved on but I adore the idea)

2. I also had a blast leveling in the little arena with no pvp enabled. It had buttons you could spawn mobs with and one would spawn this mega slime and I loved getting a group together and spamming the mega slime button and fighting for survival and exp. I don't remember what this was called but it was a big dome area, if anyone knows what I'm talking about?

I also loved leveling in swamps before all the dungeons and stuff but I think I actually liked the dungeons more than that. And this may be an unpopular opinion and I understand that many people aren't as fond of it as me but it was definitely some of the things I enjoyed most. I'm really not fond of the super big pve dungeons that are currently being used, although I'm sure some people like them and I respect that. For me though, I enjoyed the pve like I listed above much more. Maybe there's some balance or compromise between old and new that we can find and make the large majority of people happy?

I feel like the original purpose of this thread was to bring together the community and try to decide on what the majority of players want. Maybe we could come up with a few ideas, old and new, and try to chisel them down to a set of them that everyone can be content with even though they may not agree with all of them. And then we could decide on a date that they would be implemented into either the main server or a separate server and have everyone try and get in contact with all the old members and have everyone agree to coming to check things out on that day. I feel like most players are like me and check in every month or so and then see that there aren't many players online and then leave because of that. If a lot of players get on at once and start seeing the community instead of logging on periodically and not playing because no one is online maybe that would help?

That being said, Kainzo has talked a lot about all the plans for the server and maybe they will improve everything. I'm not completely sure of what all is in the works of being implemented but I just wanted to throw my opinion out. Either way, I definitely think that everyone should have a week or so where they contact all their old friends and agree to get back online and hangout a bit and see how that goes. I don't know how well that would work or if it would be a feasible undertaking but I think it's worth a try. Anyway that's just my opinion.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to Herocraft and its community in the past and present! I've had a blast on Herocraft with all of you and no matter the fate of the server, I will always have fond memories of all of you!

P.S. I'm kind of sleep deprived at the moment and I typed this up in a rush because I gotta study for a test in the morning so please excuse any awkwardly worded statements and grammar mistakes. :p

I think people are still just reminiscing and arguing on this thread. Try a brainstorm typa thing- bullet point things you want and it’ll be easier for Kainzo or others to go through and look at concrete things we agree on.

Stuff I like
•smaller map
•swamp leveling
•overworld mobs (make them tough)
•old town plugin (whatever was on haven)
•whitelist?
•no griefing rule
•don’t ‘pollute’
•few or no custom items/weapons from pve - give enchanters something to do
•less lag
•healthy trade district
•no global market
•reagents for class skills
•herogates aren’t free
•VERY LONG recall cooldown so players have to walk and risk losing items
•add back lost soul class maybe? People don’t gank lost souls
•gold currency
•death chests but with short timer
•kind of liked graveyards
•architects to replace ore and damaged map
•no personal regions only LWCs and towns

Just a scattered list I’ll add more when they occur to me

I'm interested in something that will bring back the hearld days of Zeal/DG/Bastion.

PVP Focused with Towns, focused on Town Wars and open PVP conflict between town factions.

A LOT was player driven back in the way, pvp teams and towns, alliance and such. I feel a turning point was forcing Dungeons in the way we see them today. MA back in the way as a fun experience for not only leveling but also for the communities that allowed people to find others and meet new people.

I'd like to see something like

  • Township Based
  • PVP
  • Anti-Hack/Script/Cheating
  • Mods that enforce rulings based on set rules, I.E. Like block jumping, glitching into things, etc. (Basically if your a mod, your a MOD, you belong to no team or faction)
  • PVP Points are fine, but we need more to push town fighting. (Maybe even make a build-able point for townships that can be defended by the town its in, it activates every so often and they get things if they dont let it be taken by others? Must be build outside?)
  • Whitelist/Greylist
  • Trade chat Market and shops.
  • Mobs above the world, make cave grinding illegal like ZEAL/BG/BAST
  • Push more for community PVP, throw tournies and other things to help focus.
  • Push for player driven allegiances (I.E. TC, LO, Freepers)

I can get some old TC and Order members back if this became a reality. Unfortunately, it seems as though Kain wants to move HC towards a more traditional MMO feel, but traditional MMO’s will always hold that niche better than anything a Minecraft server could realistically accomplish. I want HC to occupy the space it did previously, as it did so well and was unique enough to not have much competition at all.

I’d come back in a heart beat if stuff like this was around. I’d love to just wander around and get shrecked by the first lvl 5 I see. I always was good at losing.

-Pvp tagging should not be free, if it’s something that people want then make it a profession option (Builder). Make the profession have restrictions such as unable to mine rare materials, place lava/water, use flint and steel, etc... it should strictly be for building. You can see the imbalance of someone toggling pvp off until they amass an arsenal before turning it back on. Or using it for pvp purposes. Give it usefull building mechanics as it progresses.

-get rid of premade dungeons. Instead make it an endgame goal. Have townships each have a dungeon as part of their region that increases in tier as the township does. Have custom gear only drop from later tiers of these dungeons. This will keep basic gear useful for longer if the world isn’t flooded with custom gear. With increasingly difficult tiers dropping increasingly more powerful gear.

-make townships and their tiers require mats gained from pvping. The idea is to require pvp to pve and pve to pvp. Keep the map small, with nodes that townships have to take to get the mats to upgrade their tiers.

-have random meteorite (large ore deposites) events to offset the underground over mining. These will act as pvp hotspots. As the world gets older and more mined out, have these happen more often (eventually becoming the only way to get ores)

I envision early on people lvling in swamps and pvping at nodes to get townships up. Then they will lvl in their township dungeon more to be able to take more nodes to increase their township size and protection as well as dungeon tier. The plus side to township dungeons is that it will take away from world spawns making having a township the way to go to lvl your class, but in order to have a township you have to risk pvp. It creates an infinite loop.

This. Plus lose the stamina changes. Let people sprint and left click again

So we need help to get this type of thing off the ground. My time is extremely limited and a niche offshoot for a 8 year old game isnt what will pay my bills anymore.

I'll help with:
Guidance
Hardware hosting
E-mails
Framework for Developers
Framework for Scripters

But I don't have time to hand hold, implement, test or hire developers for these systems, this is something the community will need to do.
